Moving questions

Moving house? Get a straight answer.

Practical answers from the Scot Removals team.

Quotes and prices

How do I get an instant removal quote?

Choose the service, enter the collection and delivery details, select your move date and build an accurate inventory. The website then calculates the available price options from the information supplied.

Do I need to provide a phone number to see a price?

No. You can start the online quotation without a phone call. Contact details are requested when needed to save, send or book the quotation.

Why is the item list important?

Every selected item contributes to the estimated cubic volume, vehicle requirement and handling time. A complete item list produces a more reliable price.

Can I change my items before booking?

Yes. Add or remove items from your selected inventory and refresh the price before payment.

What if I cannot find an item?

Choose the closest suitable item or use our separate photo and video quotation service. Include a clear view of each room and any unusually large, fragile or heavy objects.

Are prices inclusive of VAT?

Yes. Prices shown by Scot Removals are inclusive of VAT unless a quotation clearly states otherwise.

Can the price change?

It can change if the inventory, route, access, move date, extra services or other material details change. Review all details before booking.

Are ferry charges included?

Where a route requires a ferry, the website applies the relevant ferry adjustment to the removal quotation. Ferry routes and availability may still require confirmation.

Inventory and cubic metres

What does m³ mean?

m³ means cubic metres: the estimated space your items occupy when prepared for transport. It helps determine the suitable vehicle and storage container.

Does the cubic volume equal the outside dimensions of every item?

Not exactly. The calculator uses the website inventory values and quantities as a practical loading estimate. Shape, dismantling and safe stacking can affect the final space used.

Will my selected items stay if I go back?

The quote journey saves progress on the same device so you can move between steps without re-entering the inventory. Avoid clearing browser storage or switching devices before finishing.

Can Scot Removals prepare my inventory from photographs or video?

Yes. Use the dedicated room photo and video quotation page. This is separate from the normal instant quote so the team can review the media and send a prepared quotation.

Container storage

How is my storage size selected?

Our system uses the inventory you provide to estimate the storage space required. We then recommend the most suitable storage option and provide the appropriate price.

How much does storage cost?

The current guide prices are £160 per month for a 10-foot container, £240 per month for a 20-foot container and £400 per month for up to 52 m³. These monthly prices include VAT and are shown separately from collection and delivery.

Do I need to find a storage address?

No. Scot Removals arranges the container storage and remains your point of contact. You provide the collection address and the return delivery details when known.

Can I book storage without knowing the final delivery address?

Yes. You can request storage first and provide the onward delivery details later. The return delivery is quoted separately when its route and access are known.

Are the container photographs exact?

They are realistic visual guides showing typical capacity and scale. The actual container appearance and facility may vary, and final capacity depends on safe loading and item shape.

What if my load is larger than 52 m³?

The team will review the inventory and arrange a multi-container storage plan with a confirmed monthly price.

Can every item go into container storage?

Tell us before booking about hazardous, perishable, illegal, exceptionally valuable or temperature-sensitive items. Some goods cannot be accepted or may need specialist storage.

Collection, delivery and access

Why do you ask about floors, lifts, stairs and steps?

Access changes the labour, equipment and time needed. Include the floor at both addresses, whether a working lift is available, external steps and any narrow routes.

What should I say about parking?

Tell us where the removal vehicle can legally stop and the approximate walking distance to the property. The customer is responsible for arranging any required parking permission or suspension unless agreed otherwise.

Can you move items through a narrow doorway?

Provide measurements and photographs when access is tight. Some furniture may need dismantling, and certain items require a specialist access plan.

Do you cover moves outside Glasgow?

Yes. Scot Removals handles local moves around Glasgow and Paisley as well as moves across Scotland and wider UK routes.

Piano and office moves

What details are needed for a piano move?

Select the piano type and provide both addresses, floor positions, lifts, external steps, pathway surface and enough detail about the internal manoeuvring space.

What piano types can I select?

The specialist piano form includes upright, digital, baby grand and grand piano options. Grand piano work may require additional planning and ground-to-ground access.

What happens if there are elevated steps?

Select yes and enter the number of steps at collection and delivery. Photographs help the team confirm equipment and staffing.

What information is needed for an office move?

List desks, chairs, filing cabinets, IT equipment, meeting furniture and other contents, then add access, parking, floor and lift information for both locations.

Can an office move be planned outside normal hours?

Add the required timing and building restrictions to the quotation. The team will confirm availability and any effect on the price.

Booking, payment and changes

When is my booking confirmed?

Your move is confirmed after the required payment succeeds and a booking confirmation is issued. A saved or emailed quote by itself is not a confirmed booking.

Is online payment secure?

Payment details are handled through Stripe's secure payment technology. Scot Removals does not store your full card details.

Can I return from payment without losing my quote?

Yes. Use the back control to return to the Scot Removals quotation. Your saved details should remain on the same device.

Can I amend a confirmed booking?

Use your booking reference or contact Scot Removals. Changes to items, addresses, access, date or services can create an additional payment or refund. Late changes may be subject to the booking terms.

What if I need to cancel?

Contact Scot Removals promptly with the booking reference. Eligibility for a refund depends on the timing and the terms accepted at booking.

Will I receive an email?

Quote and booking emails are sent to the address supplied. Check spam or junk folders if the message does not appear, and confirm that the email address was entered correctly.

Planning and packing

How far in advance should I book a removal company?

Book as soon as your moving date is reasonably certain, especially for Fridays, weekends and month-end dates. We may have short-notice availability, but early booking gives you the best choice of crew and time.

Can I book before my moving date is confirmed?

You can prepare and save a quote before the date is confirmed. A move slot is only secured after the date is agreed, payment succeeds and Scot Removals issues a booking confirmation.

When should I start packing?

Start non-essential rooms two to four weeks before the move and leave everyday items until last. Label every box with its room and a short description so unloading is quicker and more organised.

Do you supply boxes and packing materials?

Packing materials and packing help can be added where available. Tell us what needs packing when requesting the quote so the correct materials, time and crew can be included.

Do drawers need to be emptied?

Heavy, fragile, valuable and loose contents should be removed. Very light clothing may sometimes remain in strong drawers, but ask us first because the furniture must still be safe to lift.

How should I pack clothes on hangers?

Wardrobe cartons are the safest option for hanging clothes. Folded clothing can go into clearly labelled boxes or secure suitcases; avoid open bags that can tear or spill.

Will you dismantle and rebuild furniture?

We can include straightforward dismantling and reassembly when it is declared before booking. Keep fittings together and tell us about specialist, fitted, antique or unusually complex furniture.

What should I keep with me on moving day?

Keep keys, identification, medicines, chargers, important documents, jewellery, cash, essential toiletries and a change of clothes with you rather than loading them onto the vehicle.

Moving day

Do I need to be present during the move?

You or an authorised adult should be available at collection and delivery to confirm the inventory, answer access questions and check that everything is placed at the correct address.

How long will my move take?

Duration depends on volume, crew size, packing, dismantling, floors, lifts, walking distance, traffic and the route. Your quote uses the details supplied, but moving-day conditions can affect the finish time.

What happens if my keys are delayed?

Tell us immediately. We will help where the schedule allows, but waiting time or a later delivery may create an additional charge. Keep your solicitor, agent and our team updated on completion day.

Can you move us from a flat without a lift?

Yes, provided every floor, stairway, step and carrying distance is disclosed. This information determines the safe crew size, time and equipment needed.

Who arranges parking for the removal van?

The customer normally arranges suitable legal parking and any council permit or bay suspension unless we agree otherwise. Good vehicle access reduces carrying time and protects the schedule.

What happens in bad weather?

We normally continue when it is safe. We protect items as practically possible, but severe wind, snow, flooding or unsafe access may require a timing change. Keep paths clear and tell us about local conditions.

Can you collect from or deliver to more than one address?

Yes. Add every stop and its access details before booking. Extra distance, loading time and inventory at each address must be included in the confirmed quote.

What if I have more items than I listed?

Tell us before moving day so we can update the vehicle, crew, time and price. Undeclared items may not fit or may require an additional charge or separate journey.

Can children and pets stay at the property?

For safety and less stress, arrange for children and pets to stay with someone away from loading areas where possible. Keep pet carriers, food, medication and documents with you.

Appliances and special items

Will movers disconnect my cooker, washing machine or dishwasher?

Gas, plumbing and electrical disconnection should be completed before arrival by a suitably qualified person. Appliances must be drained, dry and ready to move.

How should I prepare a fridge or freezer?

Empty, defrost and dry it in advance, secure loose shelves and follow the manufacturer's transport and restart instructions. Tell us if it cannot remain upright during access.

How should I prepare a washing machine?

Disconnect and drain it, secure hoses and fit the original transit bolts where available. A qualified installer should reconnect it at the new property.

What items cannot go on the removal vehicle?

We cannot knowingly carry illegal goods, explosives, fuel, gas cylinders, dangerous chemicals or leaking containers. Tell us about paint, batteries, aerosols, weapons, perishables or other restricted items before booking.

Can you move plants?

Small plants can often be moved locally if prepared securely, but soil, moisture, shape and long-distance conditions make damage harder to prevent. Tell us about large or valuable plants in advance.

Can you move safes, artwork or antiques?

Often yes, but specialist items must be declared with dimensions, weight, value, photographs and access details. We will confirm whether extra equipment, packing or a specialist crew is required.

How are floors and furniture protected?

Our crews use suitable moving equipment and protective materials according to the job. Tell us about newly finished floors, pale carpets, fragile surfaces or building-specific protection rules before the move.

After the move and storage

What should I do if something appears damaged?

Photograph the item and packaging, keep the item available for inspection and contact Scot Removals promptly with your booking reference and details. Do not arrange disposal or repair before we have reviewed it.

Are my belongings insured during the move?

The applicable protection and exclusions are set out in the terms supplied with your booking. Declare unusually valuable or fragile items before booking and check whether you also need cover through your own home or specialist insurer.

Is collection into storage included in the monthly storage price?

No. Collection and loading into storage is a one-off removal service. The container charge is a separate monthly price, so both amounts are shown clearly before booking.

How is redelivery from storage charged?

Redelivery is quoted separately when the delivery address, access, inventory and preferred date are known. You can provide those details at the start or after several months in storage.

Does my storage payment stop automatically after redelivery?

The storage record is closed after all goods have left storage and the team confirms completion. Do not cancel a payment instruction yourself until any final storage balance and redelivery arrangements are confirmed.

Can I access my belongings while they are stored?

Access is by prior arrangement and depends on the storage facility and how the container is positioned. Contact us in advance; handling or access charges may apply.

What happens if a monthly storage payment fails?

We will contact you and request payment of the overdue balance. Continued non-payment may lead to charges and action under the storage agreement, so contact us promptly if you are having payment difficulty.

Can I move nationwide with Scot Removals?

Yes. We handle moves across Scotland and wider UK routes. Long-distance pricing considers the full route, crew time, access, vehicle requirement and any ferry, toll or overnight arrangements.
